Mistrust at heart of Jakarta-Papua tensions (5 Aug 2010)
The Straits Times (Singapore) - The long-standing discontent in Papua has been threatening to boil over for months but it was only last week that President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono made a public comment on the issue. He said his administration would conduct an audit of how government funds were spent and disbursed in Indonesia's westernmost province, where many claim that the special autonomy status accorded to the province in 2001 has failed.

It is ironic that only piecemeal attention has been given to a territory which has contributed so much to funding our development, holds a special place in the nation’s struggle for independence and adds much to the nation’s richness in biodiversity and pluralism. One killed in armed attack in Papua (5 Aug 2010)
The Jakarta Post - A migrant was killed and another injured after unidentified gunmen attacked them in Wuneri village in the restive Papua regency of Puncak Jaya, police reported. Spokesman for the papua police Sr. Comr. Wachyono said Thursday that 25-year-old Wahid, a kiosk owner in the village, was shot dead late Wednesday afternoon.

Papuan press facing threats and violence (4 Aug 2010)
The Jakarta Post - Papuan journalists called on police Tuesday to thoroughly investigate acts of intimidation and violence against them, believed to be part of a campaign by candidates eliminated from the upcoming regional elections in Merauke.
