Guards torture 20 prisoners at the Abepura Correctional Facility, Papua (22 Feb 2013)
AHRC - The Asian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) has received information regarding the torture of twenty prisoners at the Abepura Correctional Facility, Papua, on 21 January 2013. Information gathered by local activists reveals that the torture was conducted by three prison guards with the acquiescence of the head of the prison. The victims were beaten with bare hands as well as whipped with thick wire until some parts of their bodies were bleeding. Despite the injuries suffered the prison guards did not give any medical treatment to the tortured prisoners.

8 soldiers shot dead in Papua (22 Feb 2013)
Jakarta Post - The government is condemning the shooting deaths of 8 soldiers by unidentified groups in Papua in the bloodiest attack on security forces in two years. “These were irresponsible acts committed by the perpetrators amid the government’s intense efforts to accelerate development in Papua and to improve the welfare of Papuans,” Coordinating Political, Legal and Security Affairs Minister Djoko Suyanto said at a press conference at his office on Thursday.

Papua ambush: four civilians dead (22 Feb 2013)
Jakarta Post - Four civilians are dead in the latest shooting in Papua, which claimed the lives of eight Indonesia soldiers. The civilians, identified as Johanis Palimbung, Uli, Markus Renden and Rudi Lallo, were construction workers. They were on their way to the local airstrip with the military personnel when they were ambushed by unknown armed men.
