Brimob officer shot dead in Papua

JAYAPURA, Papua: An officer of the Police Mobile Brigade (Brimob) who was shot amidst gunfire with separatist rebels in Tingginambut, Puncak Jaya regency, died as he was being evacuated by plane from regency capital Mulia to Jayapura on Wednesday.

Papua Police Chief Insp. Gen. Bagus Ekodanto told reporters in Jayapura that Second Brigadier Musa Animan was alongside 10 other Brimob officers who were on their way to the Tingginambut police post to take a sick colleague to Mulia.

They were riding on two trucks when a group of armed men blocked their path as they arrived in Lombuk village, where the shooting ensued. Seven Brimob members were shot, including Musa, who was shot in the head.

Police immediately evacuated the wounded to the Bhayangkara Police Hospital in Jayapura and the Mulia regency hospital in Puncak Jaya.

Bagus said police did not chase the assailants after the gunfire but focused on evacuating the victims.

The condition in Mulia remains conducive despite the incident, Bagus said. - JP
