Dutch journalists detained for misusing visas

The Immigration Office in Jayapura on Tuesday detained three Dutch journalists for misusing their tourism visas in order to cover news on demonstration against the arrival of Free Papua Movement's leader in front of the provincial legislative council building yesterday.
Antara state news wire reported that the office had arrested three journalists --- Gabrielle Babette, Peter Mariaw Smith and Ronald Wigman --- who are working for the Netherlands-based station NRC. The Immigration Office's executive R. Hendartiartono said the journalists had violated the regulation on using tourism visas for working. "They should have asked for permission from the authority on their news reporting activities prior to the news coverage," he said.He said that the officials had been questioning them intensively and had yet to disclose the details of the violations. "If it's proven, they may be charged with article 50 of the 1992 Immigration Law and face up to five years in jail and pay a fine of Rp 25 million (US$ 2,000)," he said. (ewd)
