US-based gold and copper mining company PT Freeport Indonesia confirmed Wednesday there had been car accident near its mine in which a police officer was killed and several others injured.

The accident occurred at Mile 45 on the road connecting Tembagapura and the gold mine, said Freeport spokesman Mindo Pangaribuan.

He added the accident had nothing to do with a series of attacks targeting the company’s employees and security personnel in the last few days.

Mindo added a group of Freeport technicians and two police officers came under attack from unidentified gunmen at Mile 51 when they were on their way to help motorists who were having car trouble. Three people were injured in that attack.

“There was no attack on a convoy of Freeport buses as reported earlier,” Mindo said.
