Human rights activist Asmara Nababan dies

Former secretary general of the National Commission for Human Rights Asmara Nababan passed away on Thursday noon in Fuda Cancer Hospital, Guangzhou, China, from lungs cancer. He was 64.

Asmara’s family was waiting for confirmation from China on when the deceased would be transported to Indonesia, said Asmara’s nephew, Putra Nababan.

Born in Siborong-borong, North Tapanuli, North Utara on Sept. 2, 1946, Asmara was known as a human rights activist. He once joined the joint fact-finding team (TPGF) for May 1998 chaos and the Institute for Policy Research and Advocacy (ELSAM).
