Police arrest eight Mimika residents

A joint team comprised of members of the Police and the Densus 88 counterterrorism squad arrested Monday eight residents of Mimika for their alleged involvement in recent attacks on U.S-mining firm PT Freeport Indonesia.
The team apprehended the residents at the Wowor and Kodok housing complexes in Kwamki, Mimika, at 4 p.m local time.

The residents, all of whom were male, did not resist arrest.

Spokesperson for the Papua Police, Senior Comr. Nur Habri, confirmed the arrests were made but did not disclose further details.

“We are intensively questioning the residents,” Nur told The Jakarta Post.

Meanwhile, Army officers arrived at Moses Kilangin Airport in Mimika on Monday afternoon on a mission to safeguard Freeport following the attacks, which claimed the lives of two of its employees.

Employees have been prevented form working in Tembagapura and tight security has been enacted along the road to the mine.
