Police detain 25 residents of Papua village amidst tension

Mimika Police have detained 25 residents of Kwamki Lama village in Timika regency, Papua, during sweeping raids as tension rises following false rumor that a man died of fatal arrow injuries.

Mimika Police chief Adj. Comr. Lang Gia told kompas.com that the detained residents would be questioned over an attack against the police in Kwamki Lama on Thursday afternoon.

Kalelo Kogoya, a resident of Kampung Karang Senang, was initially reported to have died Wednesday night after suffering injuries from 20 arrow shots. He was shot on a road leading to Kwamki Lama on Wednesday afternoon.

Local police swept residential houses in Kwamki Lama village, in Mimika regency, Papua, on Thursday morning, as tensions escalated following the rumor.

Kogoya (30) is still being treated at the intensive care unit of Mitra Masyarakat Hospital.

Three police officers are also being treated after being shot with arrows and pelted with stones on Thursday's attack.
