Police monitor 114 conflict areas in Papua

Jakarta Post

PAPUA: Police are closely monitoring 114 conflict-prone areas in Papua ahead of the general elections on April 9, the provincial police chief said Saturday.

"We're watching the areas in order to secure the elections," said Papua Police chief Insp. Gen. Bagus Ekodanto.

He added that among the conflict-prone areas were parts of the central Papua mountain range, including Puncak Jaya.

Two ojek (motorcycle taxi) drivers were shot dead there by separatist rebels from the Free Papua Movement (OPM) last week.

In the same area, an army officer who was patrolling the area with other

officers was shot dead on Saturday, allegedly by the same group. -JP
