Torture widespread in prisons in West Papua

Kompas - According to the chairman of the National Human Rights Commission, Ifdal Kasim, many prisoners being held in prisons in Papua have been subjected to physical and mental torture. He said that most of the torture is perpetrated against political prisoners. 'Torture is going on is all the prisons in Papua, in Manokwari, Jayapura and Wamena, and these are the places where there are many political prisoners.'

He said that the types of physical torture being used were cigarette burns and beatings, while forms of intimidation were being used to strike the p risoners with fear.
