Two Police Mobile Brigade officers were killed and a military soldier severely injured after their car rolled over during armed clashes in Mimika, Papua, on Wednesday morning, a source within the police said.

The accident occurred at around 10 a.m. local time at mile 49 near the road running through Kuala Kencana district in the direction of PT Freeport Indonesia's Grasberg mine in Tembagapura, a location within a few kilometers radius where deadly shootings occurred last week.

The injured victim has been taken to a clinic in the district.

The police were guarding 10 buses of mining workers, who were going to start work at Tembagapura mine on the first day after authorities began opening the road, the source said.

The road had been closed following the attacks last week.

The source, who chose to remain anonymous, said that the police had a clash with an unidentified group at mile 51. The officers apparently were trying to avoid the clash when the accident occurred.

After a week of joint operations, Papua Police and military officers have arrested 15 local people in connection with a series of recent attacks on US mining firm PT Freeport Indonesia.

Papua Police Chief Insp. Gen. Bagus Ekodanto told a media conference Tuesday that questioning was underway, with three suspects soon to be named. He said about 1,000 police and military personnel were involved in the hunt for the assailants, who killed two Freeport employees and a police officer last week.
